IT IS A SHORT STORY FROM THE ARTIST, THAT NEEDS TO BE READ.
IT IS ABOUT THE “OTHER”.    AS AN OTHER, A MIGRANT THAT MOVED TO AMERICA TO CHASE MY DREAMS, THESE ARTWORKS ARE ABOUT MY JOURNEY.    I LANDED IN LONG BEACH, CALIFORNIA TO BE A FAMOUS ARTIST, AND WAS ASKED TO DO A PIECE OF ART FOR CHINA FROM AMERICA.    IT HAD TO BE THIN, CHEAP AND MOBILE.   I LIKE TO TAKE PHOTOS, PERHAPS YOU’D CALL THEM SNAP SHOTS, AND DESPITE THE FACT THAT MY PARENTS TOLD ME, I WAS NEVER GOING TO BE A PICASSO I TOOK THE PHOTOGRAPHS.   I LOVE CHINESE FOOD, DRIVING LONG DISTANCES AND TRAVEL.   SO I HIT THE BACKSTREETS OF CHINATOWN AND SUBURBAN LOS ANGELES IN MY SUBARU, I DOCUMENT THE OTHER SIDE OF CHINATOWN LOS ANGELES. DIGITALLY MANIPULATING THE PHOTOS, DRAWING COMPOSITING AND ERASING I MADE A LONG THIN DECAL THAT WRAPPED A GALLERY IN NANJING, CHINA.   BORDERS AND CULTURES ARE MY OBSESSION.   IMAGINE BEING RAISED ON AN ISLAND, WHERE TRAVEL BY AIR WAS EXPENISVE, CULTURES AND PLACES ARE EXOTIC DESTINATIONS.   SO TRAVELING ACROSS THE BORDER INTO TIJUANA FOR A MONTHLY TACO I CAN ONLY IMAGINE WHAT IT IS LIKE TO LIVE ON THE OTHER SIDE OF AN ARBITARY BORDER.   MY PARENTS HAD BEEN TO MEXICO 30 YEARS EARLIER.   MY HOUSE IS BEING RENOVATED BY MEXICAN IMMIGRANTS.    WHILE SITTING ON A STOOL IN A TACO STAND, EATING CHILLIES, I DECIDE TO HAVE 9 SECTIONS OF THE DECAL CARVED IN WOOD BY MEXICAN CRAFTSMEN.   TRAVELLING ACROSS THE BORDER, EVERY MONTH FOR 2 YEARS, 9 CARVINGS ARE CREATED. I THINK    ....   IT IS THE IMMIGRANTS THAT BUILD LOS ANGELES. SO I DOCUMENTED THIS EXPERIENCE USING VIDEO INTERVIEWS AND A BLOG.    I CARRY THE CARVINGS ACROSS THE BORDER BACK INTO THE UNITED STATES AND PAINT THEM.   THE PROJECT IS NOT COMPLETE YET.   MY DREAM IS TO TRAVEL TO CHINA, AS MY MOTHER HAD IN 1968.   I AM POSSESSED. SO IN 2012 I TRAVEL TO BEIJING FOR A 4 WEEK ARTIST RESIDENCY.    ALONE IN BEIJING I CONNECT WITH THE DICONNECTED, THE OLD AND THE MIGRANT WORKERS PRODUCING 3 SERIES OF ART THAT BRING CHINA TO CHINATOWN. MIGRANT SCULPTURES, MIGRANT PAPER CUPS AND MIGRANT ANIMATIONS. ART BY THE OTHER FOR THE OTHER.    WWW.TRAVELBYTE.TUMBLR.COM
